TRANS ANATOLIAN NATURAL GAS PIPELINE PROJECT
WHY TANAP?
The TANAP Project aims to bring the natural gas produced in Azerbaijan’s Shah Deniz-2 gas field, and other areas of the Caspian Sea, primarily to Turkey, but also to Europe. The TANAP Project, along with the South Caucasus Pipeline (SCP) and the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) are the elements that make up the Southern Gas Corridor.
           
TANAP will run from the Turkish border with Georgia, beginning in the Turkish village of Türkgözü in the Posof district of Ardahan and will pass through 20 provinces including Kars, Erzurum, Erzincan, Bayburt, Gümüşhane, Giresun, Sivas, Yozgat, Kırşehir, Kırıkkale, Ankara, Eskişehir, Bilecik, Kütahya, Bursa, Balıkesir, Çanakkale and Tekirdağ before terminating in the İpsala district of Edirne on the Greek border at this point, the TAP Pipeline will connect to the existing network, providing natural gas from Azerbaijan to the European nations. The main pipeline in Turkey will be 1850km long, including 19km running under the Marmara Sea, and will feature numerous off-take stations and aboveground installations, including,

 

  • 7 compressor stations,
  • 4 measuring stations,
  • 11 pigging stations,
  • 49 block valve stations and
  • 2 off-take stations to linking to Turkey’s national natural gas network (one in Eskişehir and the other in Thrace).
           

In addition to the aboveground installations, temporary camps will be constructed to accommodate the workers, along with all the necessary pipe storage areas and access roads.
